The Perfect Solutions to Age Old Problems
An extensive range of intensive skin care products and treatments created to answer the concerns of ageing skin.
Visual signs: dehydration crepeyness with fine lines, sun-damaged ageing skin with deepwrinkles, decreased firmness and tone, diminished skin radiance, sallow complexion exacerbated by stress, smoking and pollution are the key concerns addressed by this range.
The Nature of Ageing Skin
The ageing process features progressive modifications affecting all living beings as time passes. The modifications are due to:
- Genetic factors: chronological ageing related to inherited genes.
- Environmental factors: related to ecological conditions (sun exposure, wind, cold, pollution, etc.) and life- style habits (diet, tobacco, alcohol, etc.) exacerbated by a neglect to care for and protect the skin: these factors can prematurely accelerate skin ageing.
- Mechanical factors: myoageing (myo= muscle) caused by the natural and repeated movements of facial muscles causing the first signs of visible wrinkles.
All layers of the skin are affected with ageing concerns... The epidermis becomes thin, and there is diminished water retention capacity due to the reduction of epidermis lipids such as ceramides.
The dermis undergoes several changes during the ageing process with collagen, elastin, glycoproteins and proteoglycans all affected. Glycation creates a stiffening of these fibres leading to a lack of plumpness in the skin.

Sothys: Anti- Ageing Expertise
Atrophy or thinning of the skin results from a reduced number of cell layers (Malpighian mucus bodies): Trans- epidermal permeability is increased: substances easily penetrate through the epidermis of older skins. Trans- epidermal water loss (TWL) is accelerated and the skin dehydrates resulting in fine crepey wrinkles.
The thickness decreases from approx. 4mm (in youthful skin) to 1mm in men, and 0.8mm in women. The quantity of collagen decreases with age and elastic fibres undergo considerable changes, particularly in regions constantly exposed to UV rays (face, neck and hands). When subjected to stress and ageing, skin cells produce an excessive quantity of enzymes responsible for the catastrophic degradation (destruction) of the fibres of the extracellular matrix.
The ground substance is a gel formed primarily of water, inorganic salts, glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, and its prime function to retain water and plumpness. In the course of ageing, the ground substance decreases in volume with diminished dermal plumpness. The thinning skin becomes less firm and less elastic and shows visible signs of being loose and sagging.
Deterioration of the melanocyte system with age: pigment distribution is affected resulting in hyperpigmentated or sometimes a chromic (colourless "white spots") areas.
In Australia, deep dehydration of the skin's tissues, sun damage through excessive UV exposure, reddened zones of enlarged fragile capillaries and sensitive skin on the face and neck are the prominent features of accelerated skin ageing that typify the national image.
Sothys Research & Development has created specific skin care lines based on advanced technology to address ageing skin concerns and is a world leader with it's anti- ageing expertise.
